we have updated our cluster PTV xServer 1.12 to 1.14 last week (8th of May). The complete new features from version 1.14 are available now for all customers using the default cluster in our hosting centre.

We would like to let you know that PTV AG will be discontinuing the PTV MapServer versions 5.3 and older on 01/07/2012. From then onwards, we will no longer provide upgrades or support for these versions.

The PTV MapServer SDK is constantly being enhanced. Many new and improved functions have been integrated at the request of our customers. It also guarantees that you remain up-to-date – a basic prerequisite for day-to-day operations. PTV AG is therefore meeting the growing requirements of its clients. On the other hand, costs arise from supporting older software versions. For this reason, PTV AG, like other software providers, has to limit the number of software versions available. Our resources will be redirected into further improving the PTV MapServer. The current software solutions therefore create the perfect conditions for your business applications.

The following versions will be discontinued on 01/05/2013: PTV xSequence Server  (all versions / 2.1.0.4 and older)

Why is the product being phased out?

The sequence optimisation engine has been completely redesigned and integrated into the PTV xTour Server. Many of the new and improved functions have been further enhanced in the PTV xTour Server. For this reason, PTV AG has decided to discontinue the PTV xSequence Server and redirect its resources into further improving the PTV xTour Server in the future. This migration means you will have to adapt your application. However, you will quickly appreciate the added value of the PTV xTour Server. The current software solution therefore creates the perfect conditions for your business applications.

The Presentation and samples are now available for download  (section “xRadio Webinars / Documents & Samples / PTV xServer only”). If you want to access documents and samples of past sessions, you need to be a registered PTV Developer Zone Forum user and logged in.

If you only want to show a few dozen objects, there are two built-in approaches that don’t require any special code or architecture:
- You can add your objects completely via JavaScript in the browser, or
- you can let the PTV xMap Server draw them for you.

In the latter case, the PTV AJAX Maps component automatically requests the associated meta-data in order to create tooltips or clickable areas.

Things get a little trickier when you need to display hundreds, thousands, or even millions of objects. This requires a scalable architecture with an appropriate distribution of work between your application, the PTV xMap Server, and the PTV AJAX Maps client in the browser.

The upcoming advanced level session “High-performance PTV AJAX Maps” provides you with an approach for these scenarios that enables you to create responsive, scalable applications that are not limited by browser speed or network bandwidth. We’ll be touching topics like

• stateful and stateless servers,
• client-side and server-side drawing,
• and – perhaps most importantly – clustering of objects so that neither the user nor the browser is overloaded with data.
